June 2026 – Purchasing Manager / Counter Sales Assistant

We’re looking for a multi-skilled, experienced Purchasing Manager / Counter Sales Assistant to join our successful, customer focussed team, here at SLS Building Supplies.

As the right candidate, you will be hard working, reliable and safety focussed at all times. You will be able to work both independently and as part of a team and will be able to follow instructions as well as using your own initiative.

You would ideally have previous experience of this exact role with a builders merchant, however experience of purchasing for any kind of shop would also be a plus.

You will be in charge of ensuring stock is purchased on time, at the right price and that stock levels are consistently maintained. You will also be dealing with customer enquiries on the phone and face to face. Therefore, it is essential you have the skills to communicate effectively with Customers and Suppliers in a helpful, friendly and efficient manner.

The following skills and experience are required:

Ordering, Processing, Sorting and Storing incoming stock –

  • Experience with stock control processes and systems
  • Experience in dealing with suppliers/reps via phone and email
  • A good grasp of numbers/costs/margins
  • Ability to prioritise tasks effectively and manage workload
  • A good level of IT skills

Processing sales, orders, payments and returns –

  • Good grasp of numbers
  • Experience with computer systems
  • Excellent organisational skills and attention to detail

Dealing with enquiries, serving customers and helping customers to load –

  • Knowledge of building products and materials
  • Good communication skills
  • Friendly, helpful and outgoing demeanour
  • Good ability and manual handling skills

Hours: 8am – 5pm Monday to Friday, 8am – 12pm Saturdays. However, we are also willing to offer a part-time position to the right candidate.
